Who we are
The Sacred Birth Centre was created in response to a simple but powerful truth: birth matters.
Not as a clinical event, but as a profound rite of passage. A moment that shapes parents, families, practitioners and communities. A threshold that deserves care, listening, and respect.
We are a community-led organisation based in Glastonbury, supporting parents, birthworkers and families through creative practice, education, conversation and advocacy. Our work bridges the personal and the systemic, because individual stories and cultural change are deeply connected.

Why we exist
For too long, birth has been treated as something to manage rather than something to witness.
The Sacred Birth Centre exists to:
-
Provide accessible, community-based support
-
Advocate for dignity, informed choice and compassionate care
-
Build dialogue between families, birthworkers and service providers
-
Hold space for birth stories to be spoken and integrated
-
Support healing where experiences have been difficult or traumatic
We believe that when women are heard, culture shifts.
What we do
Community & Education
We host:
-
Workshops and creative circles
-
Peer support gatherings
-
Conversations between parents and professionals
-
Training and reflective spaces for birthworkers
-
Donation-based workshops such as Transforming Birth Trauma
We also offer pro bono midwifery and doula/birthkeeper support where possible, ensuring that care is available to those who cannot afford it.
A Physical Centre
Our Glastonbury space is both practical and welcoming: a shop, a gathering place, and rooms for hire that enable community-based services to flourish. The Centre is designed to feel calm, grounded and inclusive. It is somewhere you can walk into and exhale.
Birth Stories & Creative
Our National Lottery community-funded Birth Stories Project invites the sharing of the experience of birth, through words and art. Stories are held carefully and, with consent, shared publicly as part of exhibitions and digital archives, not to sensationalise, but to honour.
Creative expression allows stories to move from isolation into shared understanding. It turns silence into visibility.

Our Values
We are guided by:
-
Dignity – Every birth story deserves respect.
-
Listening – Witnessing is a form of activism.
-
Community – Change happens in relationship.
-
Integrity – We work alongside, not in opposition to, professionals and services.
-
Creativity – Art and story are powerful tools for integration and cultural change.
We do not position birth as a battleground. We position it as a sacred threshold that deserves better conversation.
The wider vision
The Sacred Birth Centre is part of a larger cultural shift, one that recognises that how we are born shapes how we belong.
When parents are supported, families are strengthened.
When birthworkers are resourced, systems improve.
When stories are witnessed, shame dissolves.
This is not nostalgia for an imagined past. It is a commitment to building
a more compassionate future together.
